Picture books for ages 3 to 7
India's freedom fighters
India's freedom was won by very different people. A shy lawyer who walked to the sea to pick up salt. A queen on horseback. A poet who led the marchers when Gandhi was arrested. A boy who was made to sit on a sack at school, and grew up to write rules that say everyone is equal. Their stories, told gently for ages 3 to 7.
Mahatma Gandhi
He showed that a whole country could stand up to unfair rule without fighting, starting with a handful of salt.
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar
He fought for fairness inside India too, and led the writing of free India's Constitution.
Rani Lakshmibai
In 1857 she would not hand Jhansi to the East India Company, and she is still a hero of India's fight for freedom.
Sarojini Naidu
She travelled across India giving speeches for freedom, and went to prison for the salt protest.
